Cutlery
Cutlery is an essential part of daily gastronomy, but its choice affects not only dining comfort but also the overall impression of the set table. In the following lines, we will look at what makes quality cutlery and how to choose the right one for your needs.
How to Choose the Right Cutlery
When choosing cutlery, it is important to consider several factors. The first is the material — stainless steel is the most common choice due to its corrosion resistance and easy maintenance. Quality stainless steel cutlery is marked 18/10 (18% chromium and 10% nickel), which guarantees shine and long life. The second aspect is the handle design: an ergonomically shaped handle improves holding comfort, while colored or textured variants add individuality to dining. For everyday use, you will appreciate a medium weight (around 70–90 grams per piece), which is neither too heavy nor too light. For special occasions, opt for heavier pieces weighing over 100 grams — they feel more luxurious and sit better in the hand.
Size and Type of Set
Most sets contain 24 pieces (6 large knives, 6 forks, 6 tablespoons, and 6 dessert spoons), which is sufficient for six people. When choosing, think about whether you prefer a uniform style for all occasions or want to combine different colors and shapes. For example, if you often cook Asian dishes, consider purchasing chopsticks or special soup spoons. For dessert lovers, sets with smaller spoons and forks that are suitable for cakes or ice cream are ideal.
Quality and Materials
The material directly affects the durability and appearance of the cutlery. Stainless steel is the standard, but some sets offer a surface finish such as PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), which creates a durable layer in black, gold, or other colors. This finish is scratch-resistant and retains its appearance even with frequent dishwasher washing. Another option is cutlery with plastic or silicone handles, which are lighter and suitable for children or outdoor use. For outdoor activities like camping or picnics, we recommend cutlery with a rubberized handle that prevents slipping from wet hands. For children, sets with rounded tips and a non-slip finish that minimize the risk of injury are ideal.
Maintenance and Care
Most modern cutlery is dishwasher safe, but we recommend avoiding aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the surface finish. After washing, dry the cutlery with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Sets with a PVD finish should be washed at lower temperatures (max. 50 °C) and without abrasive agents. If you use cutlery for greasy foods like steak or fish, rinse it immediately with warm water after each use to prevent dirt from settling in the crevices. For long-term storage in a drawer, we recommend using an organizer to prevent the pieces from scratching each other.
Trends and Styles
Current trends in cutlery range from minimalist, smooth lines to bold color accents. Combinations of silver with red, blue, or black are popular, adding a modern touch to dining. For lovers of classics, traditional silver sets with a subtle shine that never go out of style are available. Recently, matte surfaces have also been gaining ground, looking elegant and not leaving fingerprints. When choosing, don't be afraid to experiment — cutlery can be not only a tool but also a table decoration. Try, for example, combining gold cutlery with white porcelain for a luxurious look, or black cutlery with a wooden table for a rustic style.

Important Safety Notice for Cutlery in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on General Product Safety (GPSR)
This is a targeted safety notice for the proper and safe use of cutlery. Due to sharp edges and pointed tips, direct contact with food, and possible exposure to high temperatures, it is essential to follow the instructions below to avoid injuries and damage. This notice is issued based on the requirements of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on General Product Safety (hereinafter referred to as “GPSR”).
Basic Safety and Handling Principles
- Keep out of reach of children: There is a risk of cuts and punctures; children’s cutlery should only be used under adult supervision.
- Check before use: Inspect for bent tips, cracks, loose parts, and peeling coatings. Do not use damaged cutlery.
- Hygiene: Wash cutlery thoroughly before first use and after each use. Do not leave dirty cutlery in contact with food for extended periods.
- Safe handling: Do not carry cutlery with tips pointing towards people; do not throw or use cutlery for purposes other than eating.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions: Respect information regarding dishwasher suitability, microwave use, and temperature limits.
Proper and Safe Use
- Use as intended: Designed for consumption of meals and drinks according to the type of cutlery (fork, spoon, knife, teaspoon, etc.).
- Improper use: Do not use cutlery as a tool for prying, screwing, or cutting hard materials; do not place metal cutlery in the microwave.
- Safe environment: Do not place cutlery so that it extends beyond the edge of the table or work surface; hot metal can cause burns.
Cleaning, Maintenance, and Storage
- Cleaning: Clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid aggressive and chlorine-based cleaners; after contact with salt, acidic foods, and vinegar, rinse and dry cutlery to prevent stains.
- Maintenance: Clean surface-treated (gilded/PVD) cutlery gently with a soft cloth without abrasives. Discard cutlery if visible wear occurs.
- Storage: Store clean and dry in a cutlery organizer; keep out of reach of children.
Specific Health Warnings
- Contact with food: Use only materials suitable for food contact; do not use cutlery if there is an unusual odor, discoloration, or peeling coating.
- Allergies: Some alloys (e.g., containing nickel) may cause skin reactions; discontinue use if irritation occurs and consult a doctor if necessary.
- Burns: Metal cutlery can heat up quickly in hot liquids; handle with care.
Disposal
- Safe disposal: Wrap damaged or deformed cutlery to prevent injury to waste handlers and dispose of by metal recycling according to local regulations.
Incidents and Contact
- In case of an incident (injury, allergic reaction, burn), immediately stop using the product. Keep the product and proof of purchase for complaint processing.
